Second level beneficiaries

A project of this scale will not only impact on the living conditions and welfare of the direct beneficiaries but will also transform the economy of the Lower Usuthu River Basin through an indirect multiplier effect. Consequently the project will not only have a major impact on the local economy of the Lower Usuthu Basin but will also have a significant effect on the macro-economy of Swaziland as a whole. As far as the former one is concerned, LUSIP will particularly have a large effect on:

Wholesalers and retailers

Not only because of the large demand for farm inputs such as fertiliser and pesticides created by LUSIP, but also due to the general increase of the income of the project area's population, the business community will expand and will offer a large range of products and services resulting in further employment. Evidence from other irrigation projects in this scope suggests that these multiplier effects have a large economic impact on the whole region.

Small entrepreneurs

Small entrepreneurs and maintenance companies will greatly benefit from the large demand of services created in the context of LUSIP. Local companies, either independently or in association with South Africa companies will provide equipment and services in many fields. These can be companies producing and repairing irrigation equipment, agricultural service providers (transport and tractor services) or training institutes.
