Rationale of LUSIP

LUSIP fits into the long-term development plan of Swaziland. Within the agricultural sector, particular attention will be paid to productive smallholder agriculture and its integration into a commercial market-oriented environment.

LUSIP will help to attain the development objectives within the Lower Usuthu Basin. LUSIP proposes to capture some part of the peak flows of the Usuthu River; transfer them to a storage area, then release the water throughout the year to irrigate an area that will be used by smallholders for the type of productive, high value agriculture that is not possible at present.

To do this requires a considerable amount of engineering. In all, a total of 11,506 hectares net area is available for irrigation in the proposed project area.
