The LUSIP Background

Swaziland is characterised by large differences in the income distribution. The project area in which LUSIP is proposed to be implemented belongs to the poorest regions of Swaziland.

A major constraint for the development of the resource poor smallholder farmers is the non-availability of irrigation water which could enable them to expand their productivity. Hence, LUSIP will considerably contribute to increase the incomes of the smallholder farmers by integrating them into the dynamic, commercial agricultural sub-sector of Swaziland.

Moreover, the setting-up of private sector initiatives, particularly small and medium entrepreneurs providing services for sectors with forward and backward linkages will be encouraged by the implementation of LUSIP.
