Social and Institutional Development
LUSIP will allow a larger population of farmers onto a much larger area of cropped land than at present. Land should also be allocated to disadvantaged women and youth. The establishment of independent farmer associations will provide a
foundation on which the community could further improve their incomes and welfare.
These farmer associations could provide the basis for farmers to initiate and become actively involved in a wide range of rural development activities such as produce marketing, establishment of rural savings and credit groups, social
forestry, education and health. The project will therefore help local people gain greater self-confidence that will, in turn, enable them to improve their standards of living by their own efforts.
Participation in a democratic group will also provide the opportunity for disadvantaged members of the community to have greater influence on the future direction of local development.
